Constant Contact Release Bearing

Apologises if this is question not engine enough.

In regard to Release Bearings.....
What are the engineering reasons for preferring a Constant Contact Release Bearing configuration to an air gapped release bearing configuration ?

Re: Constant Contact Release Bearing

The way it was explained to me by Red Roberts of McLeod was that the acceleration and deceleration was harder on the bearing than having it constantly run at crankshaft speed.  Sounded logical to me.  Just my guess but I would also say that it is easier to design a hydraulic bearing system that doesn't have to retract to full clearance.  Similar to a disk brake caliper.
